Storm Swept Mountain

Of Hills and Mist

The Great Glen

Galloway Forrest Park |
My recent work in oil alludes to
the endurability of mountain and sea as well as their elusive
changeability; it has been inspired by the looming shapes and
ever – changing shadows across the hills and horizons of
Galloway and the Western Highlands, resulting in a substantial
series of semi-abstract, but expressive oil paintings. Often the
paintings have the quality of a glimpse recalled, an impression
which carries an emotional response to the landscape. I have
also been working on a contrasting series of “luminous
landscapes” – semi-abstract watercolours focussing on the
qualities of light and atmosphere on the west coast of Scotland.
My more abstract watercolour
series, also ongoing, is called “Beyond the Stone”. This relates
to the composition of the landscape - rock, water, organic
matter and colour. Inspired by a fascination with the stones and
rocks which lie at our feet but also form and contain the
elements of the landscape we see around us: I try to reflect the
organic nature of these in my method of painting – which is
improvisational but is also a two-way process of guiding and
controlling the work and responding to the colours and shapes as
they spread across the surface.
All of my work is concerned with a
perception of our physical landscape.
Currently, I live in
Kirkcudbright, Galloway, where I run my own small gallery to
exhibit my own work, but am still exhibiting widely, including
at the Islington Art and Design Fair in London, the Glasgow Art
Fair, The RGI, and Compass Gallery, Glasgow, John Green Fine
Art, Glasgow, The Broughton Gallery and at other galleries and
in private collections in Great Britain, Belgium and in Finland,
where I hold a Finnish Arts Council Award for my work in the
community with cross-arts workshops.
