New Light on Mosaic

The expression ‘truth to materials’ is normally associated with Henry Moore and the direct carving movement, but George Garson, ex-head of mural design at Glasgow School of Art , is not afraid to use it in the catalogue  to this show, currently at the Scott Gallery, Hawick.

In his 1979 mural for the University of Glasgow’s Department of Geology, Garson sandwiched fossils and semiprecious stones between courses of sandstone and slate, and his pupil Dugald MacInnes has taken ‘truth to materials’ further by adding a degree in geology to his BA in art. In his minimalist mosaics made from Scottish slate MacInnes brings the earth’s natural treasures into the light, though other contributers to this show – including an Italian contingent from Ravenna – take the more orthodox view that light in mosaic comes from within.
