Gillies Campbell

Gillies Campbell’s paintings relate to the landscape of the highlands and western Islands of Scotland and to the artist’s childhood experiences between  1949 and 1962 on the now uninhabited  island of Scarp and on the isle of  Skye.

In his landscape paintings Gillies explores the qualities of the dramatic light, subtle misty tones and rich sonorous colours which are unique to the west of Scotland.

Many of the images he presents in a still life /landscape format are based on objects made from driftwood, items of flotsam and natural forms {stones , shells , plants etc.}  which the children of Scarp  used in their daily play activities. These images provide not only a historical record  of aspects of an island childhood but also an insight into how, through play, the children of Scarp  came to an understanding of the life, work and culture of their unique island community.
