Janet Adam has been making pottery in
Edinburgh since the early 1970's, setting up The Adam Pottery
in 1983. Her wheelthrown work is mainly in high-fired
stoneware, but porcelain and white stoneware are also used.
Reduction firing in a gas kiln gives colourful, sometimes
unexpected results, and the excitement of kiln-opening never
palls.
Initially she made mainly repetition
domestic ware, but now she enjoys working in a more flexible
way, with room for experiments in glazes and a wider scale of
form. Large outdoor planters contrast with delicate
porcelain pieces and more decorative items, but function is
still central to her work.
The pottery has studio space for, at
present, six other ceramicists, who also sell from the
premises. The gallery is open from11 am to 6 pm, Mondays to
Saturdays, and visitors are most welcome to look round and
talk to the makers.
